How to hold onto hope—even when it seems like there’s no reason for hope

How do you have hope when all seems lost ?

Our 8-year old grandson Max has been playing little league baseball for 3 years now. This past summer he was in the league, where for the first time: they pitched, had balls and strikes and outs, and counted runs—although the kids always counted the runs from day one !

As we watched his last game of the regular season, we were amazed by how much fun the team had in spite of his team not winning a single game all season nor scoring a single run all year. But this was their night—they scored a couple runs and we celebrated as the Nationals won their first game.

Then come the playoffs. Double knock out. Lose two games and your season is over.

Unfortunately for Max and the Nationals, they lose game one of the playoffs.

Unfortunately for the other teams, the Nationals go on to win every game afterwards and the Nationals are crowned city champs. They even beat the undefeated Phillies twice in a row to close out the playoffs and claim the championship.

Here’s what I noticed around the ball field:

  • The grown-ups seemed overly preoccupied with the fact the team was dead last in the standings. Our mantra was “at least they’re having fun”.

  • The kids were having fun but you could see and hear their belief in themselves. They had full confidence that they could win—even though they had no idea how they could win. The kids had hope.

So for you, when it seems like there’s no reason for hope, remember the Nationals and borrow some of their child-like hope.
